On June 19th, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the slaves of Galveston, Texas were freed by the Union Army.

The news set off a wave of celebrations across the city by newly freed women and men, marking the official beginning of Juneteenth as the commemoration of the end of slavery.

Even though Lincoln freed the slaves over 150 years ago, the legacy of slavery -- racism, segregation, and intolerance -- live on in our country.

While Juneteenth is still truly a joyous occasion, this year's celebrations hold a deeper meaning -- and a degree of sadness. With the murder of George Floyd and so many others still fresh in our minds, we can’t just celebrate, we have to mourn, remember, and do better.

But as a country I know we can. Witnessing the peaceful protests across the country and the world is proof. And action is being taken -- it’s long overdue, and far too slow -- but it’s starting.

So today, on Juneteenth, let’s not just remember this as a holiday celebrating the past, let’s think of the future, and how we can continue to eliminate systemic injustice from our nation and form a more perfect union.

Happy Juneteenth,

Abby
