friend – millions of UK households are being pushed to breaking point.

Struggling to balance soaring food, energy, housing and transport costs all as the social safety net has been dismantled and work has been made less secure.

In this context, it’s not surprising that some are finding it hard to pay their council tax. But what is shocking is the way councils are reacting. Rather than support struggling residents, last year, councils sent bailiffs into over a million households.

But pressuring people through intimidation, breaking into homes, and inflicting trauma, does nothing to improve their ability to pay. It’s time to ban the bailiffs. And together we can!

friend, this week is Small Charity Week and we’ve been given a limited opportunity to get donations to our Ban the Bailiffs campaign doubled! Could you turn £5 into £10, £10 into £20, or £25 into £50 today and ramp up our campaign to end the unjust use of bailiffs? Together we can make sure that households struggling with council tax debt are supported not punished!

friend, I’ve poured over the evidence and it all points one way – the reason people fall behind on council tax is simply because they can’t afford to pay. Half are living below the poverty line and more than a quarter report skipping meals because they don’t have the money for food.

A bailiff visit does nothing to change this – it only piles on more stress and trauma, making the lives of those in debt even harder. Ultimately, bailiff use may end up costing councils much more than it brings in in tax payments, through increasing the demand for services like mental health support and housing.

The good news is that there are politicians listening to the evidence. It’s just a few weeks since we launched our campaign to ban the bailiffs but, already, we’re talking to councils about the changes they can implement. And with every council that ends bailiff use, the momentum will build.

But to keep convincing those in power we must keep our campaign strong and our voice loud. By donating today ([link removed]) , you can help do that. And because the Big Give will double whatever you can give, you’ll have twice the impact!

Together we can stand shoulder to shoulder with those living with debt to make sure that all of us are treated with dignity and respect, no matter our bank balance. And that people struggling are given support, not dealt punishment.

Thank you for all you’re doing to help build a fairer world,

Toby, Eva, Skye, Zak and the whole of the Debt Justice team
