New carbon pricing studies coming in September

With Congress on recess, August is a slow time in Washington, but we hope volunteers are taking advantage of members being in the district to engage their representatives and senators, either at district meetings or at town halls.

Looking ahead to September, CCL VP for Government Affairs Danny Richter says “a lot is going to happen,” including new carbon pricing studies and the reintroduction of the MARKET CHOICE Act. Danny gives us the lowdown in a new legislative update.

Other news this week...

Comparing carbon pricing bills: When comparing the effectiveness of various carbon-pricing bills, it’s important to make those comparisons with the same model, apples to apples, so to speak. When we do that, H.R.763 compares very favorably. Read more.

CCL on TV with congressmanCCL volunteers in Rochester made news on TV last week with their congressman, Joe Morelle, talking about his cosponsorship of the Energy Innovation Act. Watch the report.

Progress with secondary asks:  During our lobby day in June, our volunteers were given the option of making a secondary ask on one of four bipartisan bills related to climate change. Three of those bills have made progress. Learn more in this Community Bulletin post.

Working with media: CCL on Chicago radio

Julie Nowak, a volunteer with the Lake County (IL) chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, got some serious airtime on Chicago radio recently when she was a guest on the Mike Nowak Show (pictured above; no, they’re not related) on WCGO. A few years beforehand, Julie’s husband Tom was interviewed on Mike’s show about sustainable investing. Tom told Mike about their CCL activities, and, after H.R.763 was reintroduced, they circled back to get Julie on to talk about the bill. Julie’s segment starts at 1:03 of this podcast.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. To talk with other CCLers about their media work and get advice or ideas for your own, head to the “Working with the Media” forum on CCL Community.

A bipartisan approach on campus: When students started a CCL chapter at the University of Michigan,  they offered to do presentations for other campus groups. The College Republicans group took them up on that offer and later worked with the CCL chapter on a joint event. Read more.

From campus to Capitol: In just one year, the number of youth climate activists in attendance at the annual conference nearly doubled. Learn about their impressions and takeaways. Read more.
