John: Today, three years ago, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, millions of women lost more than access to abortion — they also lost access to essential reproductive health care. This ruling has undoubtedly cost countless women their lives.

But in Maine, we do things differently. Thanks to the work of Democrats in the state legislature and Governor Mills’ tireless advocacy, we’ve passed laws to ensure that care remains legal and accessible.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped Republicans in Augusta from introducing numerous egregiously anti-abortion bills and Republicans in Congress from threatening a national abortion bill.

It’s clear that reproductive freedom is more at risk than ever.

But John, my record speaks for itself. When I became the youngest woman in the nation — and only the second woman ever — to be elected Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, I vowed to always stand up for reproductive rights. And at every opportunity I stood up for reproductive freedom and Maine women.

Without the protection of Roe v. Wade, ensuring that Maine has a pro-choice governor matters more than ever. So as your next governor, I’ll stand firm against any attempt to roll back those rights. I will always defend every Maine person’s right to make their own health care decisions — without government interference.
