Trigger Warning: Mentions of Abortion, Maternal Mortality, and Death

Hey team,

Three years ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the constitutional right to have an abortion in their Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.

Since then, we’ve seen a rise of fear and confusion amongst our communities — but beyond that, a rise of state-level rollbacks on reproductive freedom and abortion access led by far-right extremists.

Right here in Georgia, this issue hits home. We’ve collectively mourned two preventable deaths of our fellow Georgians. We continue to bear witness to unnecessary trauma and hurt community members. We watched as Governor Brian Kemp rushed to pass what he bragged was “the toughest abortion bill in the country.”

In September 2024, a ProPublica report revealed that at least two women in Georgia lost their lives after being denied critical reproductive care due to Governor Kemp's extreme abortion ban — that same report warned that more deaths were likely to follow.

In February 2025, Adriana Smith, a pregnant 30-year-old nurse, was declared brain dead and was put on life support at Emory University Hospital. Although her family intended to keep her on life support until the baby was born, Governor Kemp’s restrictions still denied them the reasonable freedom and ability to make critical medical decisions on her behalf.

Thankfully, Adriana’s son was delivered by emergency C-section on June 13th, and remains in the NICU. Adriana will be laid to rest at the end of this month, and her family is asking for continued prayers for Adriana’s baby boy.

Instead of focusing on Georgia’s health care crisis, Governor Kemp continuously chooses to advance an extremist agenda that is harmful to our communities across the state.

Under Governor Kemp’s leadership, Georgia has some of the worst Black maternal mortality rates in the entire country. We have extreme doctor and nurse shortages and are faced with hospital closures across the state. To top it off — almost half a million Georgians lack access to basic health care because of Governor Kemp’s refusal to expand Medicaid.

If we’ve learned anything since the overturning of Roe v. Wade , it’s that we cannot rely on the courts to protect our most fundamental freedoms, and we most certainly cannot count on far-right officials like Kemp or the Trump Regime to protect our communities.

While we continue the work of protecting the right to vote and supporting pro-reproductive freedom and pro-democracy candidates, Fair Fight has and always will continue to uplift and support pro-democracy leaders and organizations in Georgia and across the South seeking to defend reproductive justice and educate our most vulnerable communities.

In solidarity,
Fair Fight
