Dear Friend,
If you’ve been following the crushing news since June 6, you know the Carney government fast-tracked Bill C-5, the “One Canadian Economy Act.” This bill was bulldozed through the House without proper debate or scrutiny. It’s a monstrous power grab that lets Cabinet override laws protecting our environment and Indigenous rights.
Bill C-5 gives Cabinet the power to override or change existing laws, like the Fisheries Act and Species at Risk Act, without the usual checks and balances from Parliament or the courts. It also includes a clause that lets a minister declare certain legal requirements automatically met, even if they might not be. Legal experts warn that this "deeming clause" is dangerous and unprecedented.
But the fight is not over. The Senate can still fix, or slow down, this dangerous bill if they hear from us now.
Tomorrow, June 25, the Senate begins reviewing Bill C-5. Senator Paul Prosper, a Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations and former Chief of the Paqtnkek (Afton) Mi’kmaw Nation, has promised to propose amendments. If even one Senate amendment passes, the bill must go back to the House of Commons for further debate and approval. This gives us a real chance to stop or improve this rushed and dangerous legislation.
Here’s how you can help:
- [Write to any Senator you know, especially those from your province.]([link removed])
- Ask them to protect democracy, Indigenous rights, and the environment by supporting amendments to:
- Remove or limit the government’s power to override laws.
- Require meaningful public and Indigenous consultation before fast-tracking projects.
- Ensure decisions remain accountable to Parliament and the courts.
Please also send a thank-you to [MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith](mailto:
[email protected]), the only Liberal who voted with the Greens, NDP, and Bloc Québécois against Bill C-5.

Together, we can stop this bulldozer from trampling our democracy and environment.
Thank you for standing up!
Elizabeth May,
Leader of the Green Party of Canada
P.S. This bill is a threat to everything we stand for. Please act now.
