John -- Opponents of voting rights have made a strong bet. They've doubled down on it the last few years, too.

Their bet was that we'd only care about certain states. That as long as we were focused on the swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and others, they would be free to suppress votes in states like Utah, South Dakota, Mississippi, or Kentucky. And you know what? That bet has paid off for them.

When Wisconsin tried to ban drop boxes, there was an immediate reaction and lawsuits. But not when South Dakota did the same. When Texas started messing with changes to voter ID requirements, people howled. But when Utah functionally suppressed the youth vote with new ID requirements, they got away with it.

They've created a feedback loop: States with restrictive voting laws receive little attention because they aren't electorally competitive. But part of the reason they aren’t competitive is because their state laws prevent large segments of the population from voting.

We've highlighted things in these things in the past, like voter ID in Utah or court decisions in Kansas or the most suppressive state-level voting law in Indiana, but we have to fight harder there.

The danger in ignoring the voting rights of citizens in more than half the country is that it creates a two-tiered democracy. Voters in the swing states benefit from attention and legal actions, while voters everywhere else are left to navigate increasingly onerous and burdensome requirements without meaningful support or scrutiny.

We have to fight everywhere. Donald Trump is actively dismantling democratic institutions and undermining the rule of law. Only through free and fair elections can we hope to restore our republic. But that requires free and fair elections in every state, not just in a strategic few.
