My name is Craig Brown. I co-founded Common Dreams more than 25 years ago with my late wife, Lina Newhouser.

I don't email you very often, but I need to be 100% straight with you about what Common Dreams is facing as America lurches into authoritarianism.

We started Common Dreams based on the belief that real change is possible if enough well-informed, well-intentioned people demand it. That notion has been proven correct time and again — and it's exactly the kind of journalism that is so desperately needed right now.

The corporate media have utterly failed. They care only about making their oligarch owners richer and have almost totally capitulated to Trump.

So we built an entirely different model focused on making change, not making money. Common Dreams is a nonprofit organization with no corporate bosses dictating what we publish. We don't have a paywall, nor do we accept paid advertising or government funding, which allows us to be 100% committed to serving our readers' shared values of peace, justice, and equality.

Now here's the key: Our model only works with the financial support of readers like you — and we're facing threats today like never before.

Big Tech is systematically suppressing links to our stories, making it harder for new readers to find us. Trump is threatening to strip the tax-exempt nonprofit status of organizations like ours unilaterally. Meanwhile, costs are rising, and while we've avoided the kind of bloodbath layoffs that've hit many others, the warning lights are flashing red.

That's why, for our Mid-Year Campaign, we're doing something different than in past fundraising drives. Rather than aiming to raise a specific dollar amount, we've set a goal of doubling the number of monthly donors to Common Dreams by July 1.

If we reach this goal, it will provide us with the ongoing base of support necessary to survive these threats and continue delivering the critical daily news that our readers rely on.

But if we fall short… I must be honest, the future is highly uncertain.
