Dear John —
The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t abolish slavery, nor did the end of the Civil War. In fact, it was General Order, Number 3, an issue ordered by Major General Gordon Granger on this very day 155 years ago that changed everything.
That’s why we are so proud to celebrate Juneteenth this year and every year, John. Today is a celebration of justice, independence and resilience.

For too long, liberty & justice for all were a promise unfulfilled for Black Americans. This Juneteenth comes at a moment when millions of Americans are demanding change for Black lives. The Black Lives Matter movement has demonstrated that we, the people, are dedicated to providing the justice and opportunity it takes to make the American dream a reality for the Black community. As California Democrats, we are dedicated to leading that fight for years to come.
To everyone in California, Happy Juneteenth!
