When I was just an infant, my parents moved us to the United States seeking a better life and more opportunities, John. I don’t take our rights and opportunities for granted. That is why I’ve been appalled to see the Trump Administration repeatedly break the law, attack immigration rights, voting rights, and desperately-needed healthcare funding.
I believe that protecting the right to vote is protecting the very foundation of our democracy. That’s why I led a multistate lawsuit to stop Trump’s dangerous attempt to restrict voting access. We showed the country that California will never back down when our rights are under attack .
As the proud son of an immigrant mom, I refused to let Trump’s attacks on immigrant families go unanswered. I defended the constitutional right to birthright citizenship, sued him when he unlawfully federalized the national guard and sent in Marines in response to protests in Los Angeles, and fought his unlawful attempt to put immigration enforcement conditions on federal funding. In California, we know that immigrants are essential to the fabric of who we are — and I’ll always stand up for their rights and dignity.
I stood up to Trump’s cruel cuts to public health funding , fighting to protect over $11 billion for programs that serve millions of Californians, including children, rural communities, and nursing homes. At a time when our communities needed care and compassion, Trump tried to let DOGE play politics with our health — and I made sure California fought back in court, every step of the way .
I took on these fights and more because it is my responsibility and duty as Attorney General. But it’s also because of the support from grassroots Democrats like yourself, who have stood up and spoken out against this Administration. You give us the power, momentum, and energy not only to wage these fights today — but expand our bench of California Strong leaders and keep up our work against Donald Trump.
