Dear John,
Last week, I went on a crucial visit to Estonia, accompanied by our Defence Spokesperson, Helen Maguire.
Our journey took us from the vibrant capital of Tallinn to the strategic military base in Tapa, a town that now stands as a pivotal hub on NATO’s frontline. This region is vital to the defence of the Alliance’s eastern border, in the face of Putin’s relentless imperialism.
It was a privilege to meet with our brave service personnel currently based in Estonia. Their service abroad ensures our security at home. I am proud that our British troops form such an integral part of the NATO effort, and it was incredible to witness how highly regarded they are by all of our partners.
Hosted by Ambassador Allen, we met with a wide array of Estonian Government officials, including Prime Minister Michal and Defence Minister Pevkur, and of course, British troops.
From these vital discussions, we heard a stark and undeniable truth:
The UK – with our allies in Estonia and across the rest of Europe – faces a once-in-a-generation threat to our shared security.
And beyond the threat of an expansionist Putin – hellbent on brutally subjugating Ukraine and with ambitions to recreate the Russian Empire – we face a totally unreliable Donald Trump who cannot be trusted to uphold commitments to our collective defence.
We have been pushing the Government to boost defence spending, and while the Prime Minister’s commitment today is welcome, I fear they are not moving with the urgency and clarity of purpose that this critical moment demands.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Eesti Rahvusringhääling (Estonian Public Broadcasting) to chat about what Britain can learn from Estonia when it comes to facing up to Putin’s war machine.
You can read my interview here: | | This visit to Estonia has strengthened my view that the UK must lead the international effort to guarantee our own security and that of our European allies.
Since returning, I have called for the Government to urgently: | - Put our incredible military in the best position possible to deter a war and support our allies in NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force.
- Build resilience at home to ensure British people are ready if the worst should happen.
- Go further in punishing Putin for his barbaric actions, using all the means at our disposal to support Ukrainian resistance and secure a just peace.
