John,

Today, Juneteenth, is an important day to reflect on our nation’s history, and on the ugliness of racism that lives on in so many ways.

It’s a time for each of us to consider how the promise of “equal justice” can be made real in our government institutions, and how our individual actions and omissions can make that promise more real in the daily lives of our friends and neighbors.

I believe that Black Lives Matter—today, and every day. Black lives, brown lives, Native lives, must matter, today and every day, if we take “equal justice” under the law seriously.

The prophet Amos said, “let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.” In our state, abundant with waters, let today be a day that we recommit ourselves to the cause of justice.
