A disabled veteran is struggling to land her first civilian job after years of active-duty military service. And a mom is urgently trying to find an inclusive summer camp for her daughter who uses a wheelchair.

Rhonda has had spastic cerebral palsy her whole life, and she says going to Easterseals summer camps as a girl taught her independence and gave her the confidence to navigate inaccessibility and ableism. Camp allowed her to do things she wouldn’t have done otherwise – like zip lining and swimming. She even met her first boyfriend there.

“I’m not one to just settle for what I’ve been told I can have. I’ve never been. And I think going to Easterseals camp as a kid made a huge impact on me in that respect, because that’s where I got my first taste of living independently.”

Now in her 50s, Rhonda is starting her own business to address the transportation needs of disabled individuals in Tennessee – especially wheelchair users like herself.

Feeling understood, supported, and empowered at Easterseals while growing up instilled Rhonda with the confidence she has today, as she helps other people gain independence and confidence in themselves.
