Team,

In Texas and across the country, we’re reflecting on the promise of emancipation made to enslaved African Americans on this day in 1865. On June 19th of that year, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to report on federal orders declaring that enslaved people in Texas were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

155 years later, the full promise of that emancipation remains unrealized. From Jim Crow to redlining, the War on Drugs to wealth inequality, and mass incarceration to police brutality — structural and systemic forms of racism continue to make "Liberty and Justice For All" far too aspirational for many.

This Juneteenth, we must not only celebrate how far we've come, but also recognize the work that still lies ahead as we join together to build a truly free and equal nation. The recent protests in response to police brutality and the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many others that came before them make this work clear.

This weekend, I'm hoping you will join with the Movement for Black Lives to demand policy solutions to protect and invest in Black lives. There are many ways to take action this weekend, in the streets or from the comfort of your home. Head to sixnineteen.com to find an event near you or live streams of events all over the country >> [link removed]

White Americans like me have a unique responsibility to show up for the Black community, demand institutional change, and say without hesitation:

Black lives matter.

Thank you for joining me in this fight,

Julie
