Congressman Al Green Introduces Article of Impeachment to Protect American Democracy from an Authoritarian President's Abuse of Power – Taking Our Country to War Without Congressional Authorization

(Washington, DC)—On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Congressman Al Green, together with Free Speech for People and 14thNow, released statements regarding his article of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump in response to significant concerns over his latest abuse of presidential powers. This article of impeachment identifies a troubling pattern of behavior, including the unlawful directing of military actions without the mandated authorization from Congress. President Trump has not only violated his oath of office, he has also disregarded the separation of powers necessary to maintain the independence of our three branches of government. His actions represent an abuse of power and became a threat to American democracy after he declared war without Congressional authorization. A copy of the article of impeachment is accessible by clicking here.

John Bonifaz, constitutional attorney and President of Free Speech for People, a national public interest organization which is leading the impeachment campaign at impeachtrumpagain.org, with more than 700,000 people across the country having now joined the campaign, stated: “Donald Trump is not a king.  He does not have the power to take the nation into war. The Framers were clear that only Congress would have the power to start a war against another country. In launching our nation into an illegal and unconstitutional war against Iran, in direct violation of the War Powers Clause of the Constitution, Trump has committed a grave abuse of power for which he must be immediately impeached and removed from public office. We commend Congressman Al Green for his leadership in introducing his new article of impeachment against this lawless president, and we urge all Members of Congress to abide by their oath to protect and defend the Constitution by supporting this article.”

“In the litany of unconstitutional acts committed by this administration, Donald Trump has perhaps committed his most dangerous violation by illegally declaring war on Iran.  It is both urgent and vital that Congress act to impeach and remove him from office, and I am grateful, as usual, that Rep. Green is leading without hesitation to defend the Constitution,” stated Jessica Denson, Founder of 14thNow and the Removal Coalition.

Congressman Green deserves applause for placing impeachment on the table in response to President Donald Trump’s flagrantly unconstitutional attack against Iran without a congressional declaration of war as mandated by Article I, section 8, clause 11. Every participant in drafting and ratifying the Constitution agreed that the war power should be denied the President. Congressional resolutions are pointless.  Every President has challenged the constitutionality of the War Powers Resolution of 1973. Moreover, Mr. Trump asserts the power to ignore congressional statutes with executive orders. Congress in 1970 repealed the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which professedly justified the Vietnam War. President Richard Nixon continued the war unabated,” stated Bruce Fein, a constitutional attorney and a former top DOJ official in the Reagan Administration.

Congressman Al Green stated, “Today, I am introducing an article of impeachment with the help of grassroots freedom fighters, to impeach and remove President Donald J. Trump from office to protect American democracy from entrenching authoritarianism. I did not come to Congress to be a bystander while a president abuses power and devolves American democracy into authoritarianism with himself as an authoritarian president. President Trump’s unauthorized bombing of Iran constitutes a de facto declaration of war. No president has the right to drag this nation into war without the authorization of the people’s representatives. His authoritarian actions are a warning sign we cannot ignore, making him a threat to American democracy; we must uphold and protect our Constitution from being dismantled by an authoritarian president who seeks unchecked power.”
