Meet Mishel. 2X MATCH. This autistic scientist is REDEFINING RESEARCH. 2X MATCH: GIVE MONTHLY

“You don’t look autistic.”
I hear this a lot as an autistic scientist. But what does autism even look like? Many people think they know, but unless they have met an autistic person, the likelihood is that their understanding is shaped—at least in part—by centuries of stigma and misinformation.
Even our academic understanding of autism has been largely informed by research lacking the crucial perspectives of autistic people. That is why I decided to become a researcher: to transform how autism research is conducted such that it is inclusive of genuine autistic experiences.
As a recipient of this year’s Predoctoral Fellowship for Autistic Scientists, I am grateful to have the support of Autism Speaks and generous people like you. Thank you. Please consider extending your support further by starting a monthly donation to Autism Speaks today. Through June 30, the first three months will be matched. ( [link removed] )
"Scientific rigor is central to building our knowledge base, combating stereotypes, and supporting the autistic community." Mishel Alexandrovsky, PhD student. 2X MATCH: GIVE MONTHLY
( [link removed] )
Being autistic contributed to my academic strengths and passions, and overcoming challenges with communication—while being a significant hurdle—has forced me to learn to advocate for myself. I was also lucky to find a supportive psychiatrist.
Unfortunately, many autistic people are not so lucky. In fact, one in nine autistic children are not getting the healthcare they need. Scientists like myself are conducting research right now that can help discover, refine, and expand access to the best care possible for autistic people—but we need your help.
Though I have been fortunate to avoid cuts to funding for my research, many of my collaborators have been impacted. Research—and aspiring autistic researchers like me—are at risk right now. The steadfast support of allies like you today will make a tremendous difference.
Start a monthly donation to Autism Speaks before midnight on June 30 and the first three months will be matched. Together, we can continue the discussion, debate, and scientific rigor needed to improve the lives of all autistic people. ( [link removed] )
