John -- today, we
celebrate Juneteenth.

June 19, 1865 marks the day that the Emancipation Proclamation was read to
enslaved people in Texas -- more than two years after the Emancipation
Proclamation was declared. This day later became known as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth honors Black freedom and resistance. It’s a day when we
remember how far we’ve come, but also acknowledge how far we have to go in
our fight for equality. It’s a momentous day in American history, and it
deserves to be commemorated as such.

I stand in solidarity with the protestors that have taken to the streets
nationwide to demand justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard
Brooks, and countless other Black lives who have experienced senseless
violence at the hands of police for generations.

I’ve been talking a lot with my fellow neighbors in New York’s 16th
District over the past year during my run for Congress. It’s within
conversations like these that I’m reminded of the ways we can do more in
our fight for justice -- it’s why I’m running for Congress in the first
place.

It’s on us,
John, to continue demanding
the change we deserve from our lawmakers. That’s why I’m urging Congress
to declare Juneteenth as a national holiday to honor Black freedom,
history, and resistance.
