Last week, the right-wing majority on the United States Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law that bans vital care for transgender youth.
More than 20 other states currently have similar laws on the books — and this ruling not only paves the way for those laws to remain in effect, but also gives even more states across the country the green light to pass similar legislation.
Receiving affordable, accessible health care has already been a struggle for millions of Americans, and giving states the ability to deny critical, life-saving care to trans youth is devastating. There’s no way around it.
Growing up as a young gay man, it was extremely important to me to feel comfortable in my whole, authentic self and to feel supported by my loved ones. And it’s just as important to me to ensure that LGBTQ+ youth today can feel that same support from their communities.
That’s why I want all the queer youth out there to know: I’ve got your back and will fight for you every chance I get. While this is a setback in our fight for equality, John, we must never give up.
From previously serving on the steering committee of Stonewall Democrats to being active in my community fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, I’ve worked my entire career to ensure that people like me can live openly and freely. But this work is far from over, and now, I want to hear from you: How does the Skrmetti decision impact you and your community?
Thank you,
Jake
