On Saturday night, President Trump unilaterally launched unauthorized preemptive airstrikes against Iran, risking another war in the Middle East.
I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. And the Constitution is clear: Only Congress has the authority to declare war. Trump ignored that responsibility and acted on his own.
Twenty years ago, politicians in Washington — on both sides of the aisle — started wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, after failing to ask hard questions, and thoroughly examining intelligence. As a result, we lost countless lives.
No one wants a nuclear Iran. But the President owed it to the American people to make the case before potentially starting an endless war — a war that costs lives, destabilizes entire regions, and lacks any clear strategy.
I served in uniform during that time. I’ve seen firsthand the cost of those decisions and lies. I refuse to sit back and let history repeat itself. We cannot afford to make those same mistakes.
That’s why I joined Congressman Pat Ryan and 10 fellow Democratic Veterans today in sending a letter to Trump and demanding that he follow the law, respect the Constitution, and abide by the War Powers Resolution.
The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of military action and limits unauthorized military engagement to 60 days. It’s a critical check on executive power — and we must enforce it.
Our troops deserve better. Thanks for standing with them — and with me.
