Major update, John:
Donald Trump illegally bombed Iran over the weekend on Israel’s behalf, pushing us to the brink of another endless war — and Democratic leadership responded with… AIPAC talking points.
The Democratic Party should be the anti-war party. But even though the majority of Americans oppose another endless war abroad, lobby groups like AIPAC and military-industrial complex super PACs are dumping millions into political campaigns to buy support on both sides of the aisle.
In the 24+ hours since Trump bombed Iran, 60 Democratic representatives and senators have signed onto legislation to stop this war. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are NOT on that list.
Jeffries’ and Schumer’s cowardice is not only pitiful: it’s deadly. Who knows how many human lives will be lost if Democrats let Trump plunge us into another war in the Middle East based on the same lies and spin used to justify the war in Iraq? How many more taxpayer dollars will go to bombs and weapons to support Israel’s reckless actions while Medicaid, Social Security, and SNAP benefits are being threatened with defunding at home?
Meanwhile, every single Justice Democrat is an original cosponsor of the bipartisan war powers resolution introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie.
Any member of Congress worth keeping should be trying to stop this war and demanding a war powers vote. It’s time for Schumer, Jeffries, and other do-nothing Democrats to prioritize the American people over the interests of a foreign government lobby group and defense contractor donors.
Anything less deserves a primary challenge.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
