June 2 and 9 state legislative primary recaps
Voters in 10 states cast ballots in a total of 436 state legislative primaries between June 2 and June 9. In those primaries, 41 incumbents were defeated—about 17% of all incumbents who ran.Incumbents ran in 246 of those primaries, or roughly 56% of the total. Of the 41 incumbents defeated, 12 were Democrats and 29 were Republicans. In all 10 states, there were 82 Democratic primaries compared to 164 for Republicans.
Republican National Committee adopts 2016 party platform for 2020 election
The RNC's Executive Committee voted June 10 to adopt the same platform the party used in 2016. This decision was part of a series of adjustments the RNC made to the itinerary and location of the nominating convention due to the coronavirus pandemic, which included canceling the meeting of the party’s Platform Committee. A political party platform is a statement of the party's principles, campaign themes, and policy goals that is designed to address current and relevant political issues.
West Virginia voters re-elected two state Supreme Court justices on June 9
Voters decided races for three of West Virginia's five Supreme Court justices on June 9. These elections, as well as West Virginia’s presidential and statewide primaries, were originally scheduled for May 12 but Gov. Jim Justice (R) postponed them in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Both incumbent justices who ran for a new term—Tim Armstead and John A. Hutchison—were re-elected. Armstead, who currently serves as chief justice, won re-election with 41% of the vote over Richard Neely, who received 36%, and David W. Hummel Jr., who received 23% Hutchison won re-election with 39% of the vote over Lora Dyer, who finished second with 36%. Justice appointed both Armstead and Hutchison to the court in 2018 to fill vacancies. A third justice—Margaret Workman—did not seek re-election. William Wooton—a former Democratic state legislator—received 31% of the vote and defeated three other candidates for that seat.
Fifteen new ballot measures certified from May 15 through June 15
Fifteen new measures were certified for 2020 ballots in Alaska, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma. As of June 15, 94 statewide measures have been certified in 32 states. Voters have already decided four measures in Alabama, California, Maine, and Wisconsin. Voters in Oklahoma, Maine, and Missouri will decide a total of four measures between June 30 and Aug. 4. The remaining 86 measures are on Nov. 3 ballots.
