Just days after signaling a possible delay in military action, President Trump ordered US strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the heavily fortified Fordo facility. With this intervention, the war Israel launched over a week ago has entered a far more dangerous phase – one that risks wider regional escalation and deeper US military entanglement.

While the administration hopes Iran will refrain from retaliation, there are serious concerns about possible Iranian strikes on US bases, the potential for a broader regional war, and the constitutional crisis triggered by the president circumventing Congress in authorizing military action.

Amid all this, key questions remain unanswered: What’s the endgame? Can this conflict be contained – or will it spiral into another devastating war of choice? And how will US, Israeli and Iranian leaders respond next?

Danny Citrinowicz is a fellow at the Atlantic Council and Institute for National Security Studies. He previously served as the head of the Iran branch in the Israel Defense Intelligence.

Frank Lowenstein is a former US Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations. He previously served as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State and with the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
