Team,

Today is Juneteenth—the anniversary of the day Union troops enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, and liberated more than 250,000 enslaved Black people just 155 years ago.

Americans have long celebrated Juneteenth as a day that signifies the end of slavery in the South. This year, however, Juneteenth comes only weeks after the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent, nationwide galvanization of the Black Lives Matter movement.

As the nation grieves the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others, we are reminded that while Black people may no longer be enslaved, we have fallen well short of true equality.

We have failed to deliver on our constitutional promise of justice for all. We have to do better.

In honor of Juneteenth and of our commitment at Serve America to continue fighting for that promise, we ask you to make a donation to the following organizations doing incredible work to give a voice to the voiceless and rout out racial injustice in its many, terrible forms:

Donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center >> donate.splcenter.org/

At this moment, it can seem like we are pretty far away from a world where police officers recognize and respect the humanity of Black people in this country.

It can seem like we are pretty far away from a world where the criminal justice system treats Black people with dignity and fairness.

It can seem like we are pretty far away from a world where equal opportunity to succeed, to build livelihoods, and to live in community, is truly enjoyed by all.

But while progress is slow, and the roots of systemic racism run deep, we should be encouraged by the national—rather, global—response to the murder of George Floyd. People of all races, ages, and genders are stepping up. People are listening who never did before. New allies are coming forward, and new inroads are being made.

On this important day, let’s recommit ourselves to the important work that lies ahead. Let’s be clear-eyed about how far we’ve yet to go, but let’s not be discouraged. The march ahead will demand each of us working together.

With you in the fight,

Serve America
