Liberation from enslavement

Hi John,

It's Juneteenth and we're honored to be celebrating this historic holiday. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas bringing news of the Emancipation Proclamation and that the enslaved people were free. It’s the day we celebrate true freedom after the Civil War.

Freedom for those still enslaved came two-and-a-half years after the Civil War ended -- meaning this precious information was kept from people to continue to exploit African Americans for free work. It’s a reminder that oppression often doesn’t end with a decree from the government.

Juneteenth is being more broadly celebrated this year, and we’re grateful for that. But we want to see it established as a federal, paid holiday. Sign your name if you agree that Juneteenth should be a federal holiday.

Recognizing our country’s history and how it was built with enslaved labor is critical to dismantling systemic racism that still exists today. When you know what happened in the past, it gives you an urgency to act.

But at its heart Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day or Freedom Day, is a time for fun. Folks BBQ, bring their favorite dishes, watch parades, and celebrate freedom.

There’s no doubt that Juneteenth should be a federal holiday. Black history is American history and learning about Juneteenth and our history while celebrating freedom should be part of our culture. Sign the petition if you agree >>

We hope you have a jubilant and reflective Juneteenth!

Vote From Home 2020

------------
Vote From Home 2020 is a grassroots movement that's making vote by mail more accessible. With a $25 donation, we'll send vote by mail applications to 20 voters. COVID-19 has brought America to a halt, and with it almost all in-person voter mobilization efforts. While volunteers can’t get on buses to swing states or go door-to-door right now, there is a huge opportunity for progressives, especially in solidly blue states, to get out the vote where it counts. By sending vote by mail ballots to targeted states and following up with text and calls to voters, we can ensure the 2020 general election is safe and accessible. Please forward this email if you know someone who may be interested. Our average gift is just under $25 so consider donating that today to support voting rights.

Paid for by People for Government PAC (votefromhome2020.org). Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

Contributions or gifts to People for Government PAC are not tax deductible. Your contribution will be deposited in the People for Government PAC’s Contribution Account. Individuals and Federal PACs may contribute $5,000 per calendar year to the People for Government PAC Contribution Account. Corporations, labor organizations, and other federally prohibited sources may not contribute to the People for Government PAC Contribution Account.
