Hi John,
It's Juneteenth and we're honored to be celebrating this historic holiday. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas bringing news of the Emancipation Proclamation and that the enslaved people were free. It’s the day we celebrate true freedom after the Civil War.
Freedom for those still enslaved came two-and-a-half years after the Civil War ended -- meaning this precious information was kept from people to continue to exploit African Americans for free work. It’s a reminder that oppression often doesn’t end with a decree from the government.
Juneteenth is being more broadly celebrated this year, and we’re grateful for that. But we want to see it established as a federal, paid holiday. Sign your name if you agree that Juneteenth should be a federal holiday.
Recognizing our country’s history and how it was built with enslaved labor is critical to dismantling systemic racism that still exists today. When you know what happened in the past, it gives you an urgency to act.
But at its heart Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day or Freedom Day, is a time for fun. Folks BBQ, bring their favorite dishes, watch parades, and celebrate freedom.
There’s no doubt that Juneteenth should be a federal holiday. Black history is American history and learning about Juneteenth and our history while celebrating freedom should be part of our culture. Sign the petition if you agree >>
We hope you have a jubilant and reflective Juneteenth!
