What Juneteenth is all about.
We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
John,
Happy Juneteenth!
On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers landed in Galveston Texas with news that the war was over and enslaved African-Americans were free. Since then, Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, has commemorated the end of slavery and the emancipation of Black Americans.
This year, Juneteenth feels especially significant. We can celebrate the strides we’ve made as a country since 1865 — but we are nowhere near where we should be nearly 155 years later. Black Americans still face oppression and dehumanization on a daily basis. In light of the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others, our country has reached a watershed moment where change is not only possible, it is necessary.
Our first step is empowering historically oppressed communities to take a seat at the table so they have a voice in making, and changing, the laws that can either help or harm them. Those in power have — for too long — reaped the benefits of a system that only served them.
We can dismantle systemic inequalities providing healthcare to all Americans, affordable housing, and criminal justice reform.
Change is possible, but it’s going to take a lot of work.
¡Sí se Puede!
