John --
Today our country celebrates Juneteenth -- the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States.
On June 19, 1865 -- Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, stating that all enslaved people were free. And to this day, we come together as a nation and remember the victory against slavery.
Juneteenth has taken on a new significance this year as we experience historic protests against structural racism and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. But it’s also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.
Not everyone is taking today seriously, including our own President. Republican Senator Tim Scott was even forced to admit that Donald Trump “didn't know” the significance Juneteenth when he was forced to reschedule a June 19 campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
As cities, states, and even the private sector begin to take the initiative and recognize Juneteenth, it’s long overdue for the federal government to follow suit and enact Juneteenth as a federal Holiday.
