World Rainforest
Day

Friend,
Did you know that mangroves are the guardians of India’s
coastlines?
In celebration of World Rainforest Day, we are shining a
light onto one of our reforestation projects! Mangroves are resilient
coastal trees that grow where few others can, between land and sea.
With roots that twist above and below the waterline, their striking
looks create a natural barrier that protects shorelines from storms
and provides a safe haven for a wide array of marine life.
One of those creatures? The
octopus.
|
|
India’s shallow
coastal waters are home to several species of
octopus that are clever, playful, and deeply important to
the health of ocean ecosystems. They’re natural recyclers, skilled
hunters, and a vital part of the food web. Just as remarkable is their
personality, with their ability to change color according
to their mood, and their resourcefulness, as they can build habitats
out of almost any object. |
|
Mangroves are a sanctuary for these curious creatures and are
critical to their survival. As mangrove roots spread, they create
calm, shallow waters where young octopuses can grow safely, away from
predators and strong currents. These trees also filter water and
provide shelter for crabs, mollusks, and small fish, a source of food
for growing octopi. Without mangroves, their chances of survival drop
dramatically.
Through our Canopy
Project, EARTHDAY.ORG works with global partners to
reforest areas in dire need of rehabilitation, including the mangrove
forests in The
Sundarbans in India, where these octopus call home.
Since 2010, the Canopy Project has planted tens of millions of trees
in areas with some of the world’s communities and biodiversity most
at-risk from climate change and environmental
degradation.
Join
us this June 22 to celebrate World Rainforest Day by supporting our
efforts to reforest communities worldwide, restore
ecosystems, foster sustainable development, and protect
critical biodiversity, like the octopus and other marine life, through
the Canopy Project.

PS – In case you missed it, we created a one-time
collection designed in collaboration with Ringo Starr, inspired by
his 1969 song Octopus’s Garden. Printed on 100% organic cotton, each
piece is a reminder that clean water matters — for the octopus, the
oceans, and all of us. Get yours here
– available only until July 7, 2025.
