When I joined the Army, I took an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. To protect our country against all enemies foreign and domestic. And to follow orders.
But it was never to an individual, regardless of who the Commander and Chief was at the time.
How I see my service now is not that different. When I was sworn in as Governor of the State of Maryland, I placed my hand on Frederick Douglass’ bible and swore to uphold the federal and state constitution. To protect and defend the people of Maryland.
I have fought for the people of Maryland every day of my term and I will continue to do so.
But let me be clear: If the requirement for partnership is ceding my values, kowtowing or curling up in a fetal position, or allowing my people to be left behind, then I will never surrender.
While I will work with anyone, I will bow down to no one.
