How YDG is activating and celebrating Juneteenth in 2020.

The Young Democrats of Georgia have been BUSY. We have petitions for you to sign, candidates for you to support, events for you to attend, and legislators for you to lobby. Please read on to see how you can help us change Georgia for the better.

** Jaylan Scott Takes On Grady
------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, with Jaylan's leadership, the Young Democrats of Georgia signed an open letter to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ([link removed]) to remove the Henry W. Grady monument on the corner of Marietta and Forsyth streets in Downtown Atlanta. Our calls were ignored. This year, we renew this call with a petition of our own. If you support Jaylan and Black lives across this state, please sign our petition to remove the racist monument.

** What is Juneteenth?
------------------------------------------------------------
* Juneteenth
* Jubilee Day
* Freedom Day
* Liberation Day
* Emancipation Day

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19^th, 1865, the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. -Juneteenth.com ([link removed])

** Young Democrat of the Month
------------------------------------------------------------

This month, we're highlighting Young Democrat Ebony N Carter, candidate for Georgia House District 110 in McDonough and surrounding areas. Ebony is an alumna Henry County High School and Georgia State University where she received her degrees in Anthropology and Political Science. She is a first-generation college graduate. During college, she was a Programs Director for the Black Student Alliance and President of the Young Democrats of Georgia State University. With the Young Democrats of GSU, she became active on her campus, hosting events, connecting students with civic opportunities and becoming politically active herself.

** Legislative Update
------------------------------------------------------------
Georgia's legislative session resumed on Monday. We have a whirlwind end of the session ahead of us. Constitutionally, the legislature MUST pass the state budget by the end of the month. With the House and Senate both controlled by Republican majority, we face an uphill battle.

But we are strong, resilient, and NOT AFRAID TO FIGHT. While conservative legislators are attempting to cut education funding and pad the salaries of law enforcement, we are looking to leaders like State Representatives Renitta Shannon, Park Cannon, Erica Thomas, and others to remind our elected officials they work for us. Please call your elected officials and ask them to support House Bill 426 ([link removed]) , House Bill 636 ([link removed]) , and House Bill 403 ([link removed]) . Each of these links will give you background on the bill and information on how to contact the legislators considering them.

We'll be announcing a virtual event to support these legislative efforts this weekend so stay tuned!
