In just the first half of this year, we have achieved significant legislative breakthroughs in the fight against sexual exploitation.
Most notably, the TAKE IT DOWN Act was signed into law by the president! Uploading sexually explicit content without the consent of the persons depicted is now a federal crime. This is a massive victory for survivors of image-based sexual abuse!
Even more: Utah and Texas became the first states to pass the App Store Accountability Act, requiring app stores to verify users' ages to protect children from 18+ apps. The Safer Devices for Kids Act has been signed into law in Alabama, which requires that filters for sexually explicit content automatically be turned ON when a smartphone or tablet is activated for use by a minor.
These victories are worth celebrating! But there is still much more work to be done.
Last year, despite our best efforts and overwhelming bipartisan support, we were unable to get the Kids Online Safety Act put up for a vote in the House of Representatives. But the bill still has overwhelming bipartisan support, and we will not rest until it becomes law.
