Hi team -

The iconic Frederick Douglass had a striking quote, “What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?” This quote shined a light on our country’s failure to live up to our ideals of freedom, human dignity and liberty. It’s why Black Americans for centuries have celebrated Juneteenth. They were not free on Independence Day. That’s why it’s so important for us to not just honor this day, but to fight to ensure that the nation we love, lives up to the promises it has made to its citizens. That we create a more perfect union.

Today marks Juneteenth, a celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States—when the news of emancipation reached Texas and officially ended slavery in America in 1865.

Now, I know that when most people hear about Juneteenth, they wonder, “wait, didn’t the Emancipation Proclamation end slavery in this country?” The truth of the matter is that although Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the news was delayed. It didn't reach Texas and was therefore unenforceable until Union troops landed at Galveston, Texas in 1865. Justice was delayed.

While we’ve come a long way, I can’t help but reflect on how we, as a country, have yet to live up to what this day represents. Justice unfortunately, still remains delayed. During this campaign, I regularly speak with elders from the Black community who are struck by the current fight for justice today that mirrors the same one they faced 50 years ago. We can no longer accept delayed justice. We have a duty to right the wrongs of this nation’s history. We must address the systemic racism in our country by holding those in power accountable, changing the laws so that they serve and not oppress, and continue to organize and mobilize for change.

I’m encouraged by the important conversation taking place in this country—one that is long overdue. I’m encouraged to see many still taking to the streets, safely, to demonstrate and push for action. I’m encouraged, but I’m not yet content. We must keep fighting for supreme justice for all our neighbors until the scourge of racism and the legacy of slavery is obliterated. Together, we can ensure that justice is no longer delayed.

With peace,

Qasim
