Happy Juneteenth!
Today our nation celebrates the Emancipation of the last remaining enslaved
African - Americans in the Confederacy
In recognition of the contribution of the African American community to South Carolina, the United States and the South Carolina Democratic Party we’ve proudly altered our logo for the month of June in honor of Juneteenth. Furthermore, the South Carolina Democratic Party will recognize June 19th, “Juneteenth” as a paid Holiday.
In 1863, when the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States, South Carolina was still a Confederate State. It wasn’t until two full years later in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Charleston, that the city’s enslaved population could truly celebrate freedom. Likewise in Texas, where Juneteenth began, June 19th was the day Union army general Gordon Granger announced in the city of Galveston, all slaves in Texas were now free.
On this 155th commemoration of Juneteenth, SCDP recognizes, Juneteenth is the sign of a new beginning. One that our fractured nation needs more than ever.
Let us take a moment to celebrate the rich history and contributions of African Americans to culture and body politic, while acknowledging each of us is called to do much more to eliminate hate, disparities, inequity and police brutality.
Black lives matter, Black voters matter and Black liberation matters. Our party will stay vigilant. We will elect more Democrats ready to be on the right side of history. The fight to dismantle racism, foster true social equity, economic and educational dignity, for all, continues.
