Next week, Emil Bove – President Trump’s former personal criminal defense lawyer – will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee as the latest nominee for a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t a routine confirmation. It’s part of Trump’s plan to pack the courts with loyalists who will help him stay in power, break the law, and strip away our rights. Bove isn’t being nominated to uphold the Constitution – he’s being sent to the bench to serve Trump.
Bove’s record is jaw-dropping:
- He fired dozens of January 6 prosecutors and FBI agents for doing their jobs.
- He ordered the corrupt dismissal of a federal bribery case against New York Mayor Eric Adams – leading to the largest mass resignation of federal prosecutors in decades.
- He was the subject of an internal investigation at U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York for belittling colleagues, holding grudges, and exhibiting a short temper – behavior so serious it led to a recommendation that he be removed from leadership.

Even Senator Thom Tillis – a conservative Republican – said January 6 is a red line when it comes to Trump’s nominations. That was his reason for opposing Ed Martin. So what about Bove, who purged January 6 investigators? If Tillis meant what he said, he should vote no on Bove – and so should every senator.
This nomination is so corrupt that even top conservatives like Ed Whelan and longtime Federalist Society members are speaking out. Why? Because they see what this really is: a loyalty test. Bove wasn’t picked for his qualifications. He was picked to protect Trump.
If this nomination goes through, it sends a chilling message: the courts belong to Donald Trump and the law is whatever he says it is. We can’t let that become the new normal.
