John,
There’s an old sports adage, “leave it all on the field.” That’s exactly what we’re doing, opposing the Big Brutal Budget Bill that’s currently working its way through the Senate.
This past week, we held an Emergency Virtual Rally with Sen. Ron Wyden, Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. We led a National Day of Action, where CHN Action and our allies made thousands of calls into Senate offices demanding the Senate reject this disastrous budget.
Congressional Republicans are trying to rush this dangerous bill through the House and Senate in the next two weeks to hand trillions of dollars to the very wealthy and corporations on the backs of vulnerable people and communities. Let’s get specific: next year, the similar House bill would take more than $800 away from people with incomes below $17,000 in lost food, health, or other help, on average. But people with incomes over $4.3 million will gain an average $390,000 each in tax breaks.1

Health care cuts will result in 16 million people losing their health insurance and hospitals closing across the country―particularly rural hospitals and health clinics. The New York Times’ analysis says that the Senate bill would “[impose] deeper and more expansive cuts to Medicaid” than the House-passed version of the bill by making the work reporting requirement even more harsh, likely resulting in more people losing their health care, and reducing federal funding for states, impacting state budgets as well as local hospitals and health clinics.2
SNAP cuts will result in people in every state and congressional district either losing nutrition assistance or seeing deep cuts―8 million people, including 2.5 million children, are at risk of losing some or all of their food assistance.3
Cuts to renewable energy programs will not only impact hundreds of thousands of jobs, but will also result in household energy and utility bills increasing by $400 annually at a time when everyday people can ill afford any additional increases in out of pocket expenses.4
And why are congressional Republicans seeking to cut critical programs and services relied upon by millions of Americans? To pay for even more tax cuts for the ultra-rich.
As Senate Democrats said in response to the details of the Senate bill:5
“President Trump and Senate Republicans’ ‘Big, Ugly Betrayal’ takes away health insurance from 16 million Americans, makes it harder for families to put food on the table, and raises energy costs by more than $160 billion in order to slash taxes for the ultra-rich.”
