" Juneteenth [[link removed]] is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. ”
Join the Arlington Young Democrats and Arlington Dems for a Juneteenth Celebration of Black Art & Culture [[link removed]] TONIGHT, June 19th at 6 pm . Now more than ever it’s important to celebrate and lift up voices in the Black community. The first section will feature speakers Delegate Joshua Cole [[link removed]] and award winning author Tope Folarin [[link removed]] . The latter portion will consist of an open mic as well as a guided discussion by our Secretary and Diversity & Inclusion Chair, Maya Jones.
