Dear Friend, |
In a stunning move, the Trump administration has unilaterally and abruptly withdrawn the federal government's support for a plan to save salmon in the Northwest. |
This wasn’t just any agreement: Signed in 2023, this was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring salmon back from the brink of extinction, honor obligations to tribal nations, and ensure a livable future for iconic species like the Puget Sound orcas, who rely on Chinook salmon to survive. |
But now, the Trump administration has walked away — without public input, without consultation, and without legal justification. |
This reckless decision: |
- Puts imperiled salmon and steelhead at grave risk, with no alternative recovery plan in place.
- Threatens the region’s clean energy future, halting investments in modern infrastructure and dam-replacement planning.
- Undermines tribal sovereignty, withdrawing federal support for an agreement developed by the Yakama, Nez Perce, Umatilla, and Warm Springs nations.

Let’s be clear: This isn’t just policy backtracking. It’s a deliberate dismantling of one of the best opportunities we’ve ever had to rebuild healthy and abundant salmon in the Columbia Basin, including by restoring the lower Snake River and removing four deadly dams blocking salmon from their historic spawning grounds. |
Earthjustice will continue to use all available tools to prevent extinction and advocate for rebuilding healthy and abundant salmon populations in the Columbia River Basin. |
Your gift today can help Earthjustice fight this reckless rollback and keep the Columbia Basin’s salmon from slipping into extinction. Donate now to triple your impact before the deadline. |
