In the face of war, displacement, and loss, Majda Rizq continues to show what it means to deliver care without borders.
For nearly 30 years, Majda has provided humanitarian aid across Sudan as a pharmacist and longtime Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff member. Together with her husband, Mohamed Koko, who works on MSF logistics teams, they’ve remained committed to providing care without borders—even as they themselves have been forced to flee.
“There are many days when I feel overwhelmed and lose hope, but what keeps me going is knowing that I have my loving family with me, working side by side and supporting one another.”
Since the war escalated in 2023, they’ve endured the same hardships faced by the nearly one million people displaced in El Gedaref State, Sudan: Loss of home, belongings, community, and in Majda’s case, the heartbreaking loss of her mother. Yet they remain on the front lines of the war, delivering MSF’s lifesaving emergency response to thousands of fellow refugees.

Majda, Mohamed, and people in Sudan are living through the world’s largest displacement crisis. In 2024, MSF’s activities in El Gedaref expanded to include lifesaving primary health care services for the internally displaced people remaining in the city. Our response included:
-
3,016 patients treated for cholera.
-
16,040 outpatient department consultations in mobile clinics.
-
1,653 prenatal care consultations.
-
3,294 routine expanded programs on immunization vaccinations administered.
-
277 children treated for severe acute malnutrition in outpatient therapeutic feeding centers.
-
951 million gallons of drinking water distributed and 210 emergency latrines built.
-
175 lifesaving referrals supported through mobile clinics.
"We wait for a new horizon—a time of peace when we can return to our big family home, rebuild, and look ahead with renewed prospects," Majda says. Until then, she, Mohamed, and MSF teams show up every day to deliver care in the most challenging conditions.
Our ability to deliver care without borders for patients around the world is only possible with your support. Make a triple-matched gift today to help us continue providing lifesaving medical care to people facing crisis, conflict, and displacement around the world.
