John, Democrats are locked in tight races in New Jersey and Virginia, and 2026 races all over the map are already shaping up to be tough contests. Here’s my expert analysis.

This November:

In New Jersey, Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill, who has a proven record of fighting for New Jersey families, is taking on far-right Republican Jack Ciattarelli – a Trump loyalist who backs slashing Medicaid and SNAP to benefit billionaires.
In Virginia, Democratic nominee Abigail Spanberger has what it takes to flip this state blue. She delivers real results for working families, unlike GOP Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a Trump ally who backs Elon Musk's DOGE job cuts that hurt Virginia's economy.
2026:

Right-wing Republican governors like Brian Kemp in Georgia and Ron DeSantis in Florida are term-limited in 2026 – clearing the way for huge potential Democratic pickup opportunities.
Highly effective Democratic governors like Maine Gov. Janet Mills, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly are all term-limited – making these currently-blue states huge GOP targets.
In battleground states like Arizona and Pennsylvania reelecting governors Katie Hobbs and Josh Shapiro is critical to holding the line in 2026.
