Supporter,
The endangered Florida Key deer have faced numerous threats over the past few years. A flesh-eating screwworm. Automobile collisions. Hurricane Irma. Poachers. And now — the Trump administration.
That's right, in yet another attack on the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been stealthily conducting a "review" of the beloved, dog-sized deer, whose numbers have plummeted recently due to disease and hurricane impacts.
That would make the Key Deer one of the first species to fall victim to the Trump Extinction Plan's gutting of Endangered Species Act protections. The Trump administration announced its rollback of vital protections for endangered species last week — adding to a slew of attacks already under way, like Sen. John Barrasso's proposed Senate bills that would strip the ESA's protective power.
Delisting the deer is a terrible, short-sighted idea. And we need your help to stop it.
We've filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, we're reaching out to our allies on Capitol Hill and state officials in Tallahassee, and we're working to protect the Endangered Species Act. But we just can't do it all without your help now.
Supporter, become a monthly donor now to help us stop the Trump administration and Senate's relentless attacks on the Endangered Species Act before Florida Key deer and other precious species are gone forever.
We've monitored the Florida Key deer with concern for years. And the beloved deer, not even three feet tall, are in no condition to lose Endangered Species Act Protections.
Climate change and sea level rise are a major danger to the deer's long-term survival; between 59,000 and 154,000 acres of low-lying deer habitat have already been submerged.
Not accounting for cumulative effects from threats such as hurricanes, real estate development or disease, the Trump administration's own draft species status assessment concedes that under the three "most likely" scenarios for sea level rise, the likelihood of extinction dramatically increases between 2040-2070, depending which of the Florida Keys the deer inhabit.
We're talking about an iconic species disappearing within a generation, Supporter. We can't let threats by this administration and the Senate go unchecked. Please, rush your monthly donation to help us save the Florida Key deer before it's too late.
Help us defend the Endangered Species Act — and endangered animals like the Florida Key Deer — with your gift to the Sierra Club now.
The Florida Key Deer are in a fight for survival because of humans — encroaching on their habitat, killing them with vehicles, causing the sea level rise that threatens their habitat.
Now it's our job and our duty to fight for the deer — and for every threatened species that the Endangered Species Act protects. We're so grateful for your tireless vigilance as this administration tries to roll back our progress to appease their Big Energy, Timber and Development donors. Thank you for your support again today.
With determination,
