General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Happy Friday, New Jersey!

This week, Senator Kim was at the Capitol working to improve our country’s national security and fighting back against the Trump Administration’s cuts to our science and innovation funding. He was also in New Jersey celebrating Juneteenth and meeting with community groups.

ICYMI: Senator Kim broke down the 3 biggest things happening on Capitol Hill this week. Watch his video here and help us spread the knowledge: share it with 3 friends to keep our communities aware of what’s going on in this country.

Working for New Jersey:

Engaging with NJ’s Disability Community in a Tele-Town Hall, Meeting with AP Gov. Students, and Celebrating Juneteenth

ENGAGING WITH NJ'S DISABILITY COMMUNITY IN A TELE-TOWN HALL:

On Monday, we hosted a tele-town hall to talk about the damaging impact that deep cuts to Medicaid (known as NJ Family Care in our state) would have on the disability community in New Jersey. We were grateful to be joined by Tom Spadaro, a disability advocate from Toms River, who shared how Medicaid has saved his life.

Tom has been a quadriplegic since the age of 11 due to a gunshot injury. Now in his mid-50s, Tom spoke about how he’s been dependent on home health aides that he is able afford thanks to Medicaid. When talking about how cuts to Medicaid in the Republican’s “Big Disastrous Bill” would impact his life, Tom said, “this time it’s not a bullet, it’s legislation.”

Thank you to Tom for sharing his story, and for every person who tuned in to listen. Your thoughtful questions and desire to fight against these devastating cuts to our health care are so important, now more than ever.

SPEAKING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS:

Senator Kim met with AP Government students from Egg Harbor Township High School and had a great time answering a range of questions, from what it’s like to be a senator to how young people can get involved and create change in their own communities.

It is great to see so many young leaders from New Jersey who are interested in government and public service. Thank you to all the students for asking thoughtful questions about our country and democracy!

SPEAKING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS:

On Thursday, we celebrated Juneteenth and the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Parts of the Underground Railroad came through New Jersey. Below are just a few we highlighted in honor of Juneteenth. We hope you’ll join us in continuing to celebrate the invaluable contributions Black Americans have made to our society and democracy.

Working for you at the Capitol:

Holding Trump’s Nominees Accountable, Fighting for Science and Innovation, and Working to Protect Americans from Bad Actors in the Rapidly Growing Stablecoin Market

HOLDING TRUMP’S NOMINEES ACCOUNTABLE:

On Wednesday, Senator Kim attended a hearing for Andrea Lucas, one Trump’s nominees to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). He pressed the nominee, now Acting Chair of the EEOC, about her alliance with the President, reminding her that the American people are her boss, not the President.

An agency like the EEOC is one that should be built on fairness, and we deserve leadership that will fight for the rights of all of us, not just those who the President deems worthy.

Watch Senator Kim deliver this message to Andrea Lucas.

Share this video with 3 friends if you agree that a Member of the EEOC should be fair and impartial to the President’s wishes.

DIVING INTO BUDGET RECONCILIATION:

This week on the Hill, Senator Kim highlighted something that isn’t getting as much attention right now: Trump’s $5 billion cuts to the National Science Foundation (NSF). This cut—57% of the NSF’s current budget—is devastating to American innovation and ability to compete on the world stage.

Watch Senator Kim break down 5 things we wouldn’t have today if it wasn’t for the NSF or read on below.

Did you know that we have the NSF to thank for these 5 things?

  1. Lasik eye surgery
  2. Barcodes
  3. Artificial intelligence
  4. American Sign Language
  5. Smartphones

WORKING TO PROTECT AMERICANS FROM BAD ACTORS IN THE RAPIDLY GROWING STABLECOIN MARKET:

Over and over and over again, Congress has failed to meet the moment when it comes to emerging technologies.

This week, the Senate finally took steps to begin regulating the $232 billion, largely unregulated Stablecoin market that is currently being abused by bad actors including terrorist groups, cartels, and rouge states like North Korea.

Watch Senator Kim break down the role he played in these legislative negotiations.
