Major weekend travel disruptions June 21-22: Downtown transit tunnel closure, ‘Revive I-5,’ Solstice events, Club World Cup soccer

Please plan for additional travel time this weekend due to major highway construction, popular community and sporting events, and Link light rail repair work in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel.

Transit is a key alternative to avoid driving in congestion caused by weekend lane closures on northbound I-5 in Seattle across the Ship Canal Bridge, but with an asterisk: Emergency repair work in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on Saturday and Sunday means no Link light rail 1 Line service between Capitol Hill and SODO stations.

*How to navigate a challenging travel weekend?*

*Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel closure*


* *Sound Transit is closing the 1 Line stations in the D**owntown Seattle Transit Tunnel* for emergency rail replacement [ [link removed] ] June 21 and 22. Trains will operate every 15 minutes between Lynnwood and Capitol Hill stations, and between SODO and Angle Lake stations.
* *Free shuttle buses* will be available outside of 1 Line stations [ [link removed] ] between SODO and Capitol Hill station during the repairs. Shuttle stops are outside the closed stations at Capitol Hill, Westlake, Symphony, Pioneer Square, International District and SODO stations.
* *UPDATE – Keep your Link 1 Line paper ticket:* If you are transferring from Link to Metro or Sound Transit buses, show your Link 1 Line ticket to the driver or fare enforcement as your proof of payment on June 21-22.
* *What buses can I ride?* Several existing Metro and Sound Transit routes have bus stops outside of the 1 Line stations [ [link removed] ] and can carry you through downtown Seattle.
* *First Hill Streetcar:* A streetcar will be added to First Hill service [ [link removed] ], connecting riders from Capitol Hill Station to Pioneer Square. Streetcars will operate every 12 minutes on Saturday, and every 15 to 20 minutes on Sunday.
* *King County Metro’s Trip Planner* can help you pick the fastest route for your trip [ [link removed] ].
* *Real-time information* might show inaccurate bus arrival estimates.
* *Ambassadors available:* Sound Transit will help riders navigate the changes at some affected 1 Line stations during the disruption.

*Interstate 5 Ship Canal bridge – two northbound lane closures*


* *Prepare for major traffic congestion* on I-5 and parallel city streets. I-5 will be reduced to two northbound between State Route 520 and Northeast 45th Street from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, rain or shine. The I-5 express lanes will be northbound all weekend.
* If the weather cooperates, crews will be able to stripe the freeway into two lanes. However, striping work cannot be done during rain. The inability to stripe would mean a 1,000-foot section of the freeway would have to be reduced to one lane for the weekend.
* If you must drive, consider avoiding the backups and instead use Interstate 405 or SR 99, but expect traffic volumes to be heavier there, too.

More Metro bus service starting June 21

We’re ramping up bus service on the Eastside this week, adding more trips on evenings and weekends, and launching a new peak service connecting Bothell, Woodinville and Duvall. These improvements deliver the added service riders asked for during outreach and surveys as part of the East Link Connections project.

Service rolls out Saturday, June 21, Sunday, June 22, and Monday, June 23, and updated timetables will be posted online.


* *Route 204 (Mercer Island)* [ [link removed] ]*:* Metro will launch all-new Sunday service, providing 10 round trips and matching the number of trips provided on Saturdays. Riders can request off-route trips in the DART service areas [ [link removed] ] northeast of I-90 and on the south end of the island.
* *Route 930 (Kirkland, Redmond)* [ [link removed] ]*:* we’re adding evening trips to create steady hourly service from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. Riders can request off-route trips in the Route 930 DART service areas along Willows Road [ [link removed] ].
* *New Route 931 (Bothell, Woodinville, Cottage Lake, Duvall) [ [link removed] ]:* A reinstated and revised weekday peak-only DART route will run every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This route builds on past transit connections between UW Bothell, downtown Woodinville and Cottage Lake, with a new extension to Duvall. Riders can request off-route trips in the Route 931 DART service areas in Bothell and Duvall. The added service was approved by the King County Council as part of the larger East Link Connections project, which better connects communities and Sound Transit’s growing 2 Line service between Bellevue and Redmond. The 2 Line serves 10 stations with added service and expansion across Lake Washington coming in 2026.

*The Water Taxi*

King County Water Taxi will have special post-match service to West Seattle from Pier 50 for the two night matches.

If you’re coming from West Seattle to watch, *Internazionale Milano meet CA River Plate on Wednesday, June 25,* the sailings will be at *7:30 p.m.* and *8:30 p.m.*

*The Sounder and Link light rail*

If you’re coming from south King County or north Seattle, Link light rail is an awesome connection to Lumen. Link will bring you from Lynnwood to a short dribble, walk, roll or scoot to the stadium! Metro has routes that will connect you to the light rail stops along the 1 Line.

There will also be *additional service on the Link light rail 1 line* to support post-match travel from Lumen field.

Sound Transit is running *special Sounder trains* for five of the six matches.

King County and state lawmakers partner to keep Vashon Water Taxi midday service

As King County Water Taxi midday sailings to Vashon Island approach their first anniversary, King County secured needed funding from the state Legislature to continue the service.

*__Midday service to Vashon Island on the King County Water Taxi will continue at least through June 2027.* The necessary funding for these year-round, weekday voyages was secured as part of the state transportation budget adopted on May 20.

The introduction of the first-ever midday Vashon Water Taxi sailings last year led to a 55% increase in ridership from July through December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Vashon midday sailings average 3,500 riders a month.

“Continuing these in-demand midday sailings to Vashon is a win for island residents and visitors alike,” said King County Executive Shannon Braddock. “I applaud the collaboration across our region and our state to make this happen.”
