Neighbors,

On Monday, the Committee on Business and Economic Development held a Budget Oversight Hearing to review the proposed budgets and priorities of two critical agencies under our jurisdiction: the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD). These agencies are vital to advancing inclusive economic growth, creating quality jobs, and supporting the District’s small and local businesses.

On Tuesday, the Council convened an additional Legislative Meeting where we debated several important pieces of legislation. These votes reflect our continued commitment to advancing policies that respond to the needs of District residents and strengthen our city for years to come.

Thank you for staying informed and engaged. I look forward to keeping you updated as we continue through budget season and beyond.

Monday's Budget Oversight Hearing

This week, I chaired a Budget Oversight Hearing for two critical agencies under the Committee on Business and Economic Development’s purview: the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD).

We heard testimony from Deputy Mayor Nina Albert, who provided updates on DMPED’s priorities, including affordable housing production, commercial corridor revitalization, and strategic investments to drive equitable economic growth across all eight wards.

Director Rosemary Suggs-Evans testified on behalf of DSLBD, sharing the agency’s work to support small businesses, strengthen CBE compliance, and expand access to local procurement and grant opportunities for District-based entrepreneurs.

As budget season continues, I remain committed to ensuring these agencies are effectively resourced and aligned with our goals for inclusive, community-driven economic development.

Tuesday's Child Trends and Sasha Bruce Youthwork - Centering Youth Experiences to Enhance Neighborhood Safety

This week, Team McDuffie joined Child Trends and Sasha Bruce Youthwork for a powerful community discussion as part of the Youth Participatory Action Research Project (YPAR). The event brought together young people, residents, and stakeholders to explore the root causes of conflicts that lead to violence. and to brainstorm actionable solutions that will improve outcomes for youth across the District.

This initiative is part of a three-year study funded by the National Institute of Justice, and we’re proud to support efforts that center the voices and experiences of young people in shaping safer, more supportive communities.

Thank you to the youth, residents, and community partners who showed up, shared their insights, and continue to be part of the solution.
Edgewood Public Safety Walk/Meet Up

On Tuesday, June 17, Team McDuffie joined neighbors and community leaders for a public safety meet-up in Edgewood to discuss local concerns and ongoing efforts to strengthen neighborhood safety.

The conversation included Sgt. Leak from MPD’s 5th District, ANC 5B04 Commissioner and MPD 5D CAC Vice Chair, ANC 5F03 Commissioner Patricia Williams, and Travis Dread Hughes from the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH). Together, we discussed collaborative approaches to safety, wellness, and community-based solutions.

We appreciate all who came out to engage in these important conversations.
