The tornadoes that tore through central and western Kansas on May 18-19 left homes shattered, families displaced, and communities in despair.

I’ve witnessed the destruction firsthand alongside local leaders, seeing the resilience of Kansans in the face of unimaginable loss. We’ve contacted press and pressed Governor Kelly relentlessly to act.

Finally, on June 17, she requested a presidential disaster declaration.

This is a victory for us but it’s a hollow one. Kansans deserved action on day one, not a letter to Washington a month later. The National Guard should have been deployed immediately. Bulldozers should have been clearing debris while families were still picking up the pieces of their lives. Leadership isn’t about paperwork or delays; it’s about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with your people when the storm clouds clear and the real work begins.

As a physician, I’ve spent my life acting decisively to save lives in war zones all across the world. As your next governor, I’ll bring that same urgency to Topeka. When disaster strikes, we won’t wait for bureaucrats to shuffle forms—we’ll roll up our sleeves and rebuild. Kansans deserve a leader who understands that responsibility isn’t a title; it’s a moral imperative to act swiftly, fiercely, and without excuse.
