John,
Today is a critical holiday in African American history: Juneteenth -- the liberation of 250,000 people from enslavement in Texas. In 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Union soldiers marched into Texas to finally share the message that freedom had come.
Many Americans have long celebrated this day as a second independence day, but this year, it is a day of action to continue fighting for freedom and justice, and a reminder that there is still so much more work to build a more equitable and just society.
As our country continues to grieve the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Abery, and too many others, people are looking for ways to come together to take steps on the long road to move Montana and our nation forward. Because we must do better.
That is why today, I am asking you to join me in action and make a donation to these state and national organizations that are dedicated to advancing racial equality and justice:
1. The NAACP
2. Black Lives Matter
3. Southern Poverty Law Center
Your donation will be divided between these organizations to help combat racial injustices across the country: [link removed]
If you are looking for ways to support Montana-driven organizations, consider also supporting The Montana Racial Equity Project today: [link removed]
In honor of Juneteenth, let's take this step forward together to work towards a better, more just nation.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Dudik
