John,
Every day, eight kids are killed or injured by an unlocked or unsupervised gun.
The young lives lost to gun violence in the home are unacceptable and preventable. That’s why we are urging parents to join us this ASK Day, June 21st, to ask one question that can prevent the moment no parent should ever have to experience: “Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?”
COMMIT TO ASK
Summertime, when school is out and kids are staying with friends or relatives, is when children are most likely to encounter unsecured, unsupervised firearms. Kids are curious; they don’t understand that guns are dangerous weapons. They don’t understand the harm that can occur to others or themselves. It is on us, their parents and guardians, to take one simple step that can keep our children safe.
Join us, June 21st, 2025, to share that Asking Saves Kids. As parents, our children's safety is our first priority. Today, 4.6 million children live in homes with unlocked or unsupervised guns. However, most parents don’t know when their child may be exposed to a gun. Even parents who are gun owners don’t always know: 1 in 5 parents who said their child never handled guns unsupervised were contradicted by their child’s reports. So do the simple thing: Ask, “Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?” Can we count on you to ask the simple question that can save a life?>>
COMMIT TO ASK
Parents have normalized asking important questions before trusting their kids to another guardian: Are you aware of my child's allergies/ are allergens close? Do you monitor the kids' internet access? Do you let children swim unsupervised? This is no different.
ASK Day is not just for parents of young, curious children. Have your teens ask about guns in the home before going on a babysitting job or entering a new group housing situation. Have those in your life ask about guns in the home if you know someone is in crisis and at risk of harming themselves or others.
A simple question can save a life. John, will you ask the question? >>
