Dear John,

The U.S. Forest Service mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests for future generations to enjoy. That includes the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

So why did Paul Strong, Forest Supervisor at CNNF tentatively approve 12,000 acres of logging and 1,000 acres of clearcutting as part of the Fourmile logging project in the CNNF. The Forest Service claims the logging project would have “no significant impact.” This is unacceptable.

The Fourmile project, located east of Eagle River, would disturb and build new roads into maturing forests, degrade recreation, and disrupt many struggling species including the threatened American Marten, and wood turtle.

The Forest Service is cutting corners to green light this project before it has fully assessed the significant impacts through an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) -- as required by law. We need to tell the Forest Service to slow down and analyze the impacts of this massive project fully and fairly. It’s about transparency and thoughtful decision making around our national forests that we all own.

Their rushed approval has not adequately addressed the potential harm to the CNNF, part of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, a treasured natural heritage.
Thank you for your engagement and support.
