After the heartbreaking Supreme Court decision, U.S. v. Skrmetti, demand state elected leaders commit to BLOCKING anti-LGBTQ+ legislation!
Dear MoveOn member,
This week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law that banned critical health care for transgender youth. In her scathing dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that the decision "abandons transgender children and their families to political whims."1 But the courts don’t have the final say about our families and children—we do. And we’re going to keep fighting.
Health care for trans youth is literally lifesaving. Young people—along with their families and medical providers—are best situated to make informed decisions about their care. But instead of following the research, Republicans are attempting to stoke their most radical base by spreading lies and misinformation about trans youth and stripping away their rights.
Already this year, there have been more than 865+ anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country.2 From legislation restricting necessary medical care to discriminatory and invasive "bathroom bills," these anti-LGBTQ+ bills disproportionately target trans people, including trans youth, and are being pushed by the far-right in order to strip away fundamental rights and freedoms for everyday Americans.
The SCOTUS decision makes it even more urgent for elected leaders to commit to blocking anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in their states. Will you sign the petition?
This month, during Pride, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) requested public tips on hospitals and clinics that provide certain health care for trans youth so the government could investigate these centers.3 Despite the research that shows trans youth who receive care report improved mental health,4 and care for trans youth isn’t provided until after months of consultation, President Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are determined to vilify trans kids and the people who support them in order to advance their extreme anti-LGBTQ+ agenda.
The wave of anti-LGBTQ+ bills does not reflect the majority of people in this country, who overwhelmingly support LGBTQ+ equality. Instead, these attacks are being driven by a few conservative state legislators who want to align themselves with the Trump administration and divide and distract their constituents while they enrich themselves and give tax breaks to the wealthy.
Our elected officials are supposed to represent us—and we refuse to watch while the rights and liberties of our LGBTQ+ friends, neighbors, and loved ones are stripped away one bill at a time.
Will you sign the petition to let your governor know that constituents expect them to fight back against the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation sweeping the country?
These attacks are only going to ramp up. A bill was recently passed that would outlaw K-12 student clubs based on sexuality or gender identity in Texas.5 "This bill makes kids sicker, sadder, more alone," said Texas Representative Jolanda Jones. "This bill doesn't protect children. It endangers them. It doesn't give parents more rights. It strips children of their dignity."6
And it's not just Tennessee and Texas. Anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has been introduced in nearly every state in the country this legislative session.7 These bills put the lives of LGBTQ+ people at risk and make our communities less safe for those who need protection and support the most.
We trust LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones to make decisions about their families, bodies, health, and future. And our country is strongest when everybody—regardless of whom they love—can feel safe and supported in our schools, workplaces, and communities. Trans youth especially need to see adults like us stand up against these attacks, and they need to see our elected officials fight these discriminatory laws every step of the way.
None of us are free while any of us are under attack. Add your name to the petition to urge your state leaders to stop the passage of anti-LGBTQ+ bills and protect queer and trans communities!
