Team, this week the Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law restricting access to gender-affirming care for minors.
This is a devastating blow for transgender rights across our country.
This decision gives legal cover to anti-trans health care legislation that has been passed in 25 states, and experts warn that it could pave the way for far greater restrictions on care for adults as well.
To be clear: these laws and the ruling supporting it are not based on science or evidence. They are based on hate and discrimination.
Access to gender-affirming care has proven to lead to overwhelmingly positive outcomes for those who choose to receive it. In many cases it is medically-necessary care. It gives young LGBTQ people the freedom to feel accepted — and to accept themselves — at a time when so many others want to control them and their bodies.
And regardless of where you stand on the issue, the fact remains that health care decisions like these should be made between a patient, their parents, and their doctors, not left to hateful Republican politicians.
It’s going to be an uphill battle to push back against the kind of anti-trans legislation that this ruling allows, but we must commit to that fight. Only action at the national level can undo the damage being done by GOP-led states.
