Location: Chicago Environmental Justice Network Offices: 3700 S Iron St, Chicago, IL 60609, USA
Context:
For decades, polluting industry has been disproportionately sited in minority and low income neighborhoods, leading to higher rates of asthma, cancer, and other illnesses. Chicago has the opportunity to reverse course with the Hazel M Johnson Cumulative Impact Ordinance. If passed, this ordinance will require that the city take into account the cumulative pollution experienced in a neighborhood before giving large polluters a greenlight. Likewise, it gives communities a seat at the table in this process.
