Independent journalism is in serious trouble.
Over the past four years, more than 10,000 working journalists in the U.S. have been laid off. Nearly half of those layoffs occurred in the last 18 months, and with Congress on the verge of defunding NPR and PBS, the worst may yet to come.
Make no mistake: This is not just a crisis for people losing their jobs. This is a crisis for democracy — and all of civil society.
That’s why we’ve set an ambitious goal of doubling the number of monthly donors to Common Dreams by July 1 so that we can not only avoid our own layoffs but expand our reporting to fill the gaps created by cutbacks elsewhere.

Here at Common Dreams, we’ve largely avoided the kind of bloodbath layoffs that have hit so many other news outlets. The reason is that, unlike others, we don’t rely on corporate advertising or government funding.
